Gippsland pounded by wind and rain

Rivers are rising after heavy rain fell overnight in Gippsland.

More than 50mm fell in the Sale, Bairnsdale, Latrobe Valley, Yarram and Warragul areas since 9am yesterday with more expected this morning.

Higher up, Mt Baw Baw has had more than 200mm.

There are warnings of flooding on all river systems in West and Central Gippsland .. including the Thomson, Macalister, Latrobe, Mitchell, Avon Rivers and Traralgon Creek.

People who live in lower areas around those waterways are being urged to monitor the Vic Emergency app and web site.

Authorities say levels are rising rapidly and various degrees of flooding, some of it major, is likely during the day.

Rainfall totals of 30 to 110mm have been been recorded in the Thomson River catchment and up to 125mm across the Latrobe River catchment.

A further 40 to 100mm are possible today, although the weather bureau says rain will ease today.

Trees and branches are down on highways and local roads and the Princes Highway is down to one lane at Lindenow South. The eastbound has been cut by flooding and police are directing traffic.

The Great Alpine Road is closed between Bruthen and Ensay, and Upper Middle Creek Road is closed between Yinnar South and Grand Ridge.

Ausnet Services is dealing with a number of power outages affecting homes and traffic lights. Power loss is being experienced in parts of Traralgon and Traralgon West, Moe South, in the hills south of the Latrobe Valley and in the Rawson, Erica and Walhalla area.
