Gippsland trains affected by Covid-related driver shortage

Trains on the Gippsland line are being replaced by coaches today after a V/Line train driver tested positive for Covid-19.

The Department of Transport said more than a hundred drivers have had to isolate, affecting workforce numbers.

Services on the Bairnsdale, Warrnambool and Swan Hill lines have been impacted.

The Gippsland Regional Public Health Network has confirmed there are NO exposure sites in Gippsland, and little risk to the Gippsland public.

"V/Line and the Department of Transport are working closely with the Department of Health to support the drivers and other staff affected, and we are exercising an abundance of caution in the interest of the drivers and our passengers," according to a department spokesman.

"Public transport continues to operate under a strict COVID-safe plan with deep cleaning every night and more than 500 hand sanitisers installed across the network."

From the Gippsland Region Public Health Unit, Friday 11am:

A positive case of COVID-19 has been identified in West Gippsland.

This case is linked to the V/Line workforce.

From a Gippsland perspective, this is a low risk case and there are no exposure sites to announce at this time. All close contacts of the case have been identified and are in quarantine while undergoing testing.

There are a number of exposure sites associated with this case in Metropolitan Melbourne and the GRPHU is working closely with the Victorian Department of Health to provide support while investigations continue.

While lockdown restrictions ease in regional Victoria, this is reminder that we must remain vigilant.

If you are experiencing any symptoms (however minor), including fever, flu-like symptoms such as coughing, sore throat, fatigue and shortness of breath, or loss of taste or smell, please get tested and stay home until you receive a negative result.

Please quarantine if you are directed to do so. Your cooperation significantly reduces the spread of the virus.
