Paynesville plan to pursue potential

The Slip Road area of Paynesville could be turned into a thriving maritime precinct if the Paynesville Business and Tourism Association is successful in gaining government funding.

The plan one of five priorities set out by the association for the next five years, with others including a boost to the Raymond Island koala experience for visitors, and adding new on-water activities and land-based events.

Martin Richardson from the Association said the Paynesville foreshore has a lot of potential for further development.

"The Slip Road area in Paynesville is an extensive area of foreshore area on McMillan Strait.

"At the moment it's a gravel car park and we would like to see berthing for visiting boats, recreational vessels, family facilities, foreshore walkways and boardwalks and really to turn that are into a prime foreshore area for people to visit."

Martin Richardson said with around 25,000 people visiting Raymond Island each year to see the koalas, the Association would like to turn it into a world class experience.

"We'd like to see the potential for that koala experience to really be realised by investing in better trail facilities, provision of information for people, and really to put Raymond Island on the map as one of the best wildlife experiences in Australia."

Association committee members have met with East Gippsland Shire staff and Councillors to present the plan and outline the funding required over the next five years.

Discussions are also underway with local state member Tim Bull and federal member Darren Chester.

A small working group has been formed that includes representatives from Raymond Island. East Gippsland Marketing is also involved, working to secure funding for a Raymond Island Koala Trail app that will provide information and education to visitors.
