40 degrees and Total Fire Ban

Temperatures will reach into the 40s in parts of Gippsland today with hot northerly winds to increase in strength ahead of a cool change tonight.

Bairnsdale is forecast to hit 41 degrees; 40 in Sale, Lakes Entrance and Orbost; and 39 in the Latrobe Valley.

A Total Fire Ban is in force until midnight and there's an alert for a heightened risk for asthma sufferers, with the increasing threat of bushfires, extreme heat and wind.

The National Asthma Council says people with asthma should follow their action plan but others also need to be alert to the possible signs of an asthma attack.

V/Line is warning that they're running an Extreme Heat timetable today. Journey times may be extended and some services replaced by coaches for all or part of the journey.

Meanwhile police have commenced Operation Safeguard, warning against reckless behaviour that increases the risk of bushfires. And not only reckless behaviour like using grinders on Total Fire Ban days but also deliberate acts of arson.

Wellington Shire Council will open their outdoor pools for the season a day early due to today's hot temperatures.

The pools at Sale, Heyfield, Maffra, Rosedale, Stratford and Yarram will open at 3.30 this afternoon.
