200 offences in Gippsland over the long weekend disappoints police

Police say they're disappointed after almost 200 offences were recorded in Central and East Gippsland during a four-day road blitz.

Operation Scoreboard was held over the AFL Grand Final long weekend with 197 offences on the books across the Baw Baw, Latrobe, Wellington and East Gippsland districts.

Well over half related to speeding, 117 across the four police districts from Thursday to Sunday.

There were 17 disqualified or unlicensed drivers caught, 26 unregistered vehicles intercepted and 7 vehicles impounded.

Another 8 offenders were drink drivers and 6 were drug affected.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said it was disappointing to see so many people make the conscious decision to drink or take drugs and get behind the wheel of a car.

Across the state, police performed 110,209 preliminary breath tests and 3,161 drug tests over the four days of detection.

The number of lives lost on the state's roads has risen to 204, up from 152 at the same time last year.
