Candidates line up as election is called

May 18 has been confirmed as federal election day with Darren Chester set to re-contest the ultra-safe seat of Gippsland for the National Party.

At the 2016 election Mr Chester from Lakes Entrance retained the seat with a two-party preferred vote of 68.4 per cent. He was elected to the House of Representatives at a by-election in 2008, caused by the resignation of Peter McGauran.

Although nominations are still to be called by the Australian Electoral Commission, we know that Mr Chester will face challenges from at least three candidates.

Federation University academic Antoinette Holm will stand as a candidate for Labor, community worker Deb Foske for the Greens, and personal care assistant Kerri Brewer for Clive Palmer's United Australia Party.

Education, health and climate change are emerging as key issues in the Gippsland electorate, as well as drought response.

Writs for the election were issued this morning after Prime Minister Scott Morrison met with Governor-General Peter Cosgrove. Once they're received by the AEC, dates for candidate nominations and early voting will be announced.
