Education, health and climate change emerging as Gippsland election issues

The unofficial election campaign is well underway with Labor taking the challenge up to sitting member in Gippsland, the Nationals' Darren Chester.

The federal election is still to be called but is widely tipped by political commentators to happen before the end of May.

Labor candidate Antoinette Holm was in Bairnsdale yesterday talking to people in the main street, at the hospital, disability employment providers, Patties Foods and the CFA district headquarters.

Following last week's federal budget, education, health and climate change are emerging as key issues in the Gippsland electorate.

"Funding for hospital and health services; funding cuts that have been made of the schools; there's infrastructure road blocks, if you like, to business expansion... those are the things that people are talking about," Ms Holm said.

"People are also talking about the longest drought in recorded history."

Meanwhile, Mr Chester was in Yarram yesterday announcing $250,000 to build a new exhibition and storage shed at the town's showgrounds.

Mr Chester said the derelict old shed it will replace is unsafe and no longer suitable.
