Newborough dog owner found guilty after dog starved to death

A Newborough dog owner has been fined $7,500, and disqualified from being the person in charge of any animal for a period of seven years, after RSPCA Victoria found the carcass of a small white terrier dog lying on the accused's concrete driveway.

A neighbour had been alerted by a smell emanating from the owner’s backyard over a period of two weeks and had raised concerns about the animal’s welfare.

An autopsy found the death had been caused by a severe nutritional deficiency, and had been dead for some time when found.

RSPCA Inspector Stuart Marchesan said it was disturbing "the dog was left to slowly starve to death in the backyard while his owner resided in the house just metres away."
