Chester won't stand for Nats deputy leadership

The Member for Gippsland Darren Chester said he won't put his name forward for the Nationals deputy leadership when a vote is taken today in Canberra.

He told Sky News he's focused on bushfire recovery work here at home.

"No I don't intend to.

"I've got a big job on my plate with the bushfire recovery work that's underway in Gippsland right now and I'm looking forward to working with my community on that.

"I've got a job I'm doing in the veterans and defence personnel area.

"I'd like to be very much involved in the broader resilience and emergency management issues we'll have going forward in regional Australia."

Nor is Mr Chester expecting to return to the cabinet.

"It's a media expectation... I can read newspapers and read the online commentary as well.

"No deal has been done. I haven't asked for a deal, I haven't approached anyone, I haven't put my hand up for a job..."

That's not to say though that he wouldn't accept a cabinet role if it were offered.
