Cooking Up Connections

Gippsland families cooking on film to showcase their culture

Families from across Gippsland are invited to celebrate Social Inclusion Week 2020 by filming themselves cooking up a storm and showcasing their culture.

Together Gippsland – a network of community organisations, education providers, councils, clubs and groups – has launched the ‘Cooking Up Connections’ project to celebrate the region’s cultural diversity through food.

Together Gippsland is a network that harnesses its knowledge and resources to celebrate, engage with and bring awareness to our multicultural families and communities living in Gippsland. One of their first projects is a celebration of Social Inclusion Week 2020.

“Social Inclusion Week 2020 (21-27 November) is more relevant than ever,” Multicultural Strategic Planner at Latrobe Community Health Service and Together Gippsland member, Farhat Firdous, said.

“COVID-19 and subsequent restrictions have exacerbated the isolation already experienced by many members of our community,” she said.

“The theme of this year’s celebrations is ‘Connect, Collaborate and Celebrate’. In response, Together Gippsland and our partners are hosting Cooking Up Connections, which is a series of short videos that showcases families cooking a meal that is significant to them and their culture.”

Using their mobile phones, participants are asked to choose a meal and create a short video explaining the meal, why it is significant and how it is cooked.

“Recognising that food is a universal language and social connector, the project aims to give viewers an insight into the richness of cultural diversity in the region and give participants an opportunity to tell their stories,” Ms Firdous said.

Participants are encouraged to use locally-sourced ingredients and provide information on where hard-to-find products can be found in Gippsland.

The project is open to everyone and people from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to participate.
