Nats leadership change may put Darren Chester on back bench

A minor cabinet reshuffle will come later this week after Barnaby Joyce took back the National Party leadership, and position of Deputy Prime Minister, from Michael McCormack.

The Member for Gippsland Darren Chester currently holds the cabinet positions of Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Minister for Defence Personnel.

However, Mr Joyce is likely to elevate members who supported him in the vote, at the expense of McCormack allies like Mr Chester.

Faced with the prospect of a move to the back bench, Darren said he is keen to focus on Gippsland.

"I think Michael McCormack did a terrific job as Deputy Prime Minister and we were able to work together to deliver major funding for projects right across Gippsland," Mr Chester said.

"As the Member for Gippsland I am absolutely determined to focus on the things that matter to Gippslanders... things like infrastructure, fighting for jobs in our community, delivering the services we need.

"My focus is on bushfire recovery, the flood and storm recovery, and making sure that Gippsland gets its fair share from the government budget."

To put a national focus on the region, Mr Chester wore a "100% authentic Gippslander" shirt on ABC's Q&A television program last week.
