Gippsland's Caleb Serong voted AFL Rising Star

One of Gippsland Power's brightest stars in 2019 has won the AFL's Rising Star award for 2020.

Caleb Serong was picked up by Fremantle in the Draft a year ago and has played every game with the Dockers this season since round 4.

Serong from Inverloch and then Warragul was outstanding in his final year with Gippsland Power. He co-captained Vic Country at the 2019 AFL U18 Championships and won Vic Country's most valuable player award.

In Fremantle's midfield this season, Serong averaged 16.9 disposals and 3.4 clearances.

He was nominated for the Rising Star award after his Round 8 performance against Geelong, which saw him boot one goal from 22 disposals and seven tackles.

“My biggest goal at the start of the year was to play AFL footy and to make my debut, ideally to just keep my spot in the team," Serong told Fox Sports.

"I think I set a few goals from the shutdown period just to initially debut, and once I made my debut I didn’t want to give up my spot in the team.

“Ever since I was four or five I wanted to play AFL footy.

"I just wanted to run around the backyard, kicking the footy, that was just always my dream.

"My family have always been there to support me and I love them very much and thank them.”
