Controversial McMillan cairns in Wellington to stay

Wellington Shire councillors have voted not to remove cairns honouring early Gippsland explorer Angus McMillan.

After a very emotional debate, with compelling points on both sides of the argument, the motion by Cr Carolyn Crossley to demolish two cairns on council land in Sale and Stratford was defeated in a tight 5 votes to 4.

McMillan has been directly linked to large-scale massacres of Indigenous people in East Gippsland in the 1840s.

The Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation has been strongly making the point to Council that the cairns are destructive and hurtful to the local Aboriginal community.

The West Gippsland federal electorate of McMillan was renamed Monash two years ago.

Written submissions were received from the public before last night's meeting and verbal submissions were heard prior to the vote.
