'Hazardous' air quality in Gippsland

The Environment Protection Authority has labelled air quality in West Gippsland, the Latrobe Valley and East Gippsland today as 'very poor' to 'hazardous'.

Smoke is drifting across wider Gippsland from the East Gippsland bushfires and will increase slightly from a light easterly wind this afternoon.

St John Ambulance has a useful reference guide about the health impacts of smoke in the air.

They say inhaling smoke, gas or toxic fumes can decrease the supply of oxygen to the lungs, burn the airways and cause the onset of a respiratory emergency. Prolonged exposure to toxic fumes such as bushfire smoke is a possible health risk that can affect even healthy people as warned by the Australian Medical Association.
